Aims:

  1. raise awareness regarding substance abuse;
  1. develop capacity to prevent and/or manage substance abuse;
  1. focus on the prevention of FASD through the provision of awareness and prevention programmes, clinical diagnostic services, epidemiological research, education, training and surveillance;
  1. establish sustainable programmes aimed at eliminating FASD as a preventable disorder among new-born children in South Africa

 

Objectives:

  1. To participate in extensive, collaborative scientific and medical research in order to examine and understand all issues surrounding the use of alcohol and the impact of alcohol consumption on individuals, the unborn child and communities.
  2. To collect and disseminate high quality data and information which can be used by decision-makers in government and in the private sector to facilitate the elimination of fetal alcohol syndrome as a preventable birth disorder.
  3. To provide consultation, training and assistance to medical professionals and primary healthcare workers to build capacity, facilitate ongoing research and promote the development of appropriate programmes to combat FASD.
  4. To plan, implement and manage intervention and prevention programmes in carefully identified "communities in crisis" throughout South Africa.
  5. To conduct extensive public education and awareness programmes.
